Answering Old Man and the Sea Questions

Answering Questions

Why does the old man keep contradicting himself?
I think he keeps contradicting himself because I think he does it so he doesn’t get to positive and excited so if it does get away then it won’t be as bad. He also doesn’t want to get to negative so he just gives up.

How far from land is the old man?
Well the Marlin pulled him for around three days so he probably is at least 2 or 3 days from the island with good wind.

Will he make it back to land with the fish?
That is something you’ll have to wait and see at the end of the book, but my guess is that if he keeps getting sharks to come at this pace then he most likely won’t make it back with that.

Why would he leave the fish aside the boat knowing sharks would be coming? Couldn’t he find some way to get it aboard?
He could get it on the skiff the only problem would be he wouldn’t be able to keep afloat with it. He wouldn’t have been able to cut the Marlin up either and keep some on board because the sharks would smell the blood and would have came in bigger numbers.

Why does he only call the marlin “fish” if he has so much respect for it?
I think the reason he calls it a fish sometimes because it’s just how he thinks cause he talks about man in the same way.

Why does he not use better equipment or technology to fish?
He doesn’t have that much money so he can’t really afford new technology. He can’t even afford a good sail seeing as it is a sack. You think he would try and make a little more money to buy some better things.
